South African Jazz musician Ray Phiri, who founded the band Stimela and performed with Paul Simon on Graceland tour, died yesterday of cancer at the age of 70, Associated press press.
South African President Jacob Zuma called the musician`s death "a Huge loss for the people of South Africa and for the entire music industry"
Phiri, lead singer and guitarist known for jazz versatility,Indigenous South African rhythms and other styles, has received numerous music awards in his home country.
one of the last performances of Ray Phiri was the Azgo festival, which took place at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo Mozambique, on may 20th.
"Ray Phiri has always been driven by a deep curiosity about the world around him and the passion for music, which is deeply rooted in the country where he was born, and none of these forces has diminished over the years" read the Program of Mozambican festival
" Iam a student of life and will never stop discovering, creating and exploring" said phiri, on his interview quoted by the Azgo festival organization.
